Colorado Data Leak Compromises Informant Safety
The sheriff in Mesa County, Colorado is having a pretty bad week. It was just revealed that an IT employee with the county inadvertently leaked the identity of 200,000 police informants, crime victims, and suspects earlier this year when he copied the contents of a database to another server.
According to the Associated Press, the employee had copied the database in the form of a giant raw text file with everyone’s information available stored in plain text. He assumed that the target server was secure. It turns out that his assumption was wrong. The server wasn’tsecure. The information contained in the file made it out onto the open web
